The life and career of Babyface is set to be highlighted in an iconic way.
The producer, whose real name is Kenny Edmonds, is finally stepping into the documentary spotlight. Emmy-nominated director Chris Moukarbel is currently filming a doc on the music icon, with Kenya Barris producing and HarbourView Equity Partners backing the project.
Babyface’s journey from a kid in Indianapolis to a global music legend will be unpacked with never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews, and a behind-the-scenes look at his timeless catalog. The doc will spotlight collaborations with his fellow music legends.
Key moments we hope to see highlighted in the documentary include:
- The making of the iconic “Waiting to Exhale“ soundtrack
- His creative process behind executive producing the “Soul Food” movie soundtrack
- Winning his first Grammy Award in 1993 for Best R&B Song with “End of the Road” performed by Boyz II Men and co-written with L.A. Reid and Daryl Simmons
“I’ve often wondered how an unassuming kid from Indianapolis got to where he is today,” Babyface told Deadline. “This documentary is giving me a chance to go down memory lane with a fine-tooth comb.”
Barris added, “Babyface is one of one…I hope this project gives people a glimpse into the man behind the musical genius, who just might be one of the funniest motherf**kers I’ve ever met.”
With a career that includes 13 Grammys, over a billion streams, and soundtracks to some of Black cinema’s most emotional moments, this doc has the potential to be a classic in itself.
