Baller Alert’s Team of the Week: Dallas Cowboys

How ‘bout them Cowboys?!

Sunday Night Football is undoubtedly the biggest game of the week. The bright lights, super loud fans, and national audience make for an exciting and highly anticipated game each Sunday. This week the Dallas Cowboys faced off with the New Orleans Saints in Dallas. The last time these two teams met in New Orleans, the Saints embarrassed the Cowboys pretty badly. So this time around, the Cowboys were more than ready to get their revenge on Drew Brees and company.

The Cowboys won the coin toss and chose to receive the ball to start off the game. On the first drive, several efficient passes by quarterback Tony Romo and six carries by running back DeMarco Murray helped to quickly bring the Cowboys to the redzone. On the 12th play of the drive, Romo found wide receiver Terrence Williams in the endzone for a touchdown. This would only be the start to the Cowboys’ big night. On the Saints’ first possession of the game, they were able to move into Dallas territory with the help of a few defensive penalties and a couple of quick runs and catches but they were eventually stopped on third down and forced to punt the ball. At the end of the first quarter, the Cowboys successfully held the Saints to a score of zero. The Saints were able to get the momentum going on their first drive of the second quarter and made it to the 23 yard line before getting stopped. On fourth down, the Saints attempted a field goal kick but the ball sailed wide right, missing the goal posts. On the next Cowboys drive, kicker Dan Bailey made a 51 yard field goal and increased the lead to 10. The Saints got the ball back and on second down, quarterback Drew Brees threw the ball for wide receiver Robert Meachem. As the ball moved through the air, linebacker Bruce Carter was able to get a hand on it and tipped the ball right into fellow linebacker Justin Durant’s direction, who intercepted the ball and gave it back to the Cowboys offense. The Cowboys took advantage of the turnover right away. Romo tricked the Saints defense with the pump fake, allowing running back Lance Dunbar to take off on a huge 24 yard run. On the next play, DeMarco Murray ran it in for his first touchdown of the night to make the score 17-0. The Cowboys defense stepped up yet again on the next series of downs and forced the Saints to punt after a quick 3 and out. On the following possession, Romo handed the ball off to Murray, who somehow broke through five defenders and two tackles for a 22 yard gain. A holding call on offense later on the drive negated a big play by wide receiver Dwayne Harris but the Cowboys still found a way to score. Romo hit wide receiver Cole Beasley for a first down then completed a pass to tight end Jason Witten for another first down. This set up a second touchdown pass from Romo to Terrence Williams to make the score 24-0, wrapping up an extremely dominant first half. Jerry Jones was even quoted as saying it was the best half he’s ever seen in his 25 years of being the owner of the Dallas Cowboys.

At the start of the 3rd quarter, the Saints were finally able to put up points on the board with a field goal. On the next Cowboys possession, Tony Romo ran 21 yards and slid for a first down, which was also the longest run of his career, to set up a second DeMarco Murray run touchdown. Losing 31-3 at this point, the Saints were desperate to make something happen in their favor. Near the end of the third quarter, they went for it on 4th and 2 and Brees completed a pass to wide receiver Marques Colston to keep the drive alive. Five plays later, tight end Jimmy Graham caught the ball and headed toward the endzone but fumbled the ball on the run. It was immediately picked up by safety J.J. Wilcox, who carried it back some yards before fumbling himself, but it was eventually recovered by the Cowboys. The Saints finally started to make a comeback in the fourth quarter. A huge 62 yard run by running back Khiry Robinson helped to set up a pass from Brees to tight end Josh Hill, who ran into the endzone for the Saints’ first touchdown of the game. Romo was unable to convert a third down on his next possession, giving the Saints the ball back. On second down, Brees connected with running back Travaris Cadet for a big 31 yard play to get deep into Cowboys territory. A few plays later, Brees threw a pass to an open Jimmy Graham, who ran into the endzone for a 13 yard touchdown. With 10 minutes left in the game, the Saints were now down by just two possessions and there was more than enough time to tie the score and possibly even win the game. On the next drive, the Saints defense came up big with another stop, sacking Tony Romo on third down. However, the Cowboys defense came right back and forced a 3 and out for the Saints. On 4th and 9, punter Thomas Morestead came out onto the field and it appeared as if the Saints were going to punt the ball away. Instead, they faked the punt and Morestead, with the ball in his hands, looked to get a first down but was tackled by defensive end Jack Crawford short of the first down, which turned the ball over to the Cowboys. With just over 3 minutes left, a touchdown pass from Romo to wide receiver Dez Bryant pretty much sealed the fate of the game. After the Saints fumbled the ball on their final drive of the game and the Cowboys recovered, the Cowboys went on to win the game 38-17.

Sunday’s Dallas Cowboys team was reminiscent of the Cowboys team of the ‘90s: dominant, relentless, and transcendent. It was definitely one of Tony Romo’s better performances of his career. Next week the Cowboys will be getting a visit from the Houston Texans for an in-state rivalry game. Hopefully they can continue to play like this for the rest of the season and make it into the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

Now what’s football without the fine football players hiding underneath those pads and helmets? Each team definitely has its share of cuties and the Dallas Cowboys are no exception! Let’s take a look at WR Dez Bryant, RB DeMarco Murray, and TE Jason Witten.

#88 Dez Bryant – Wide Receiver

Dez Bryant is often referred to as one of the best wide receivers in the league. There’s no doubt he’s talented on the field, earning a spot at the 2013 Pro Bowl and ranking in the top 50 NFL players in both 2013 and 2014, but he’s talented off the field as well. Check out this video of him freestyling.

On second thought, he should probably just stick to catching footballs and throwing up the X. #29 DeMarco Murray – Running Back

Running back DeMarco Murray was a huge factor in the Cowboys’ win over the Saints on Sunday night. He is currently leading all NFL running backs in rushing yards and touchdowns this season and is on pace to break the NFL’s single season rushing record. He’s having one hell of a year to say the least!

#82 Jason Witten – Tight End

Not only is tight end Jason Witten cute, but he’s also compassionate. As domestic violence has been a big issue in the NFL recently, Jason Witten’s SCORE Foundation has been getting more attention. Having dealt with domestic violence issues growing up, Jason started the ‘Coaching Boys Into Men’ program as part of his foundation in 2010 to teach young boys about the dangers of domestic violence. It’s good to know that he has just as much of an impact off the field as he does on the field.
