Baller Alert’s Today In Hip Hop: Nas Released “I Can”

blogged by @lanaladonna

“I Can”-one of few hip-hop songs geared towards children, was released February 11, 2003.⠀⠀

The track came from Nas’ second album, “God’s Son.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Inspired by a close friend who fell victim to the scarring effects of drug abuse, #Nas used this song to encourage children to remain drug-free and to pursue their dreams.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Rolling Stone’s Christian Hoard threw a little salt on the track’s name by saying, ‘I Can’ was “a silly stay-in-school ad attached to a Beethoven sample.”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Facts over opinions of course- ‘I Can’ charted at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #7 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks. To this day, it remains Nas’ highest charting single.
