This week’s New Music Friday arrives with a combination of soul, R&B, and polished West Coast vibes, led by fresh releases with plenty of substance.
Jill Scott returns with her highly anticipated album, “To Whom This May Concern.” The project marks a new chapter for the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, known for merging spoken word, neo-soul, and R&B across her catalog. On this release, Scott leans into live instrumentation and layered vocal arrangements across 19 tracks, continuing the storytelling approach that has defined her career since her critically acclaimed 2000 debut, “Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1.”
Jamie Foxx also steps back into music with his new single, “Somebody.” The Oscar-winning actor and multi-hyphenate entertainer returns to his R&B roots on the track, showcasing smooth vocals over contemporary production. The record focuses on romantic devotion just in time for Valentine’s Day, perfectly aligning with the slow-jam lane Foxx previously explored on hit albums like “Unpredictable” and “Intuition.”
On the hip-hop front, Larry June releases “Everything Allocated,” featuring Curren$y and The Alchemist. The single pairs June’s lifestyle-focused lyricism with The Alchemist’s signature minimalist production. Curren$y adds a laid-back element, reinforcing the polished, independent-rap aesthetic all three artists are known for.
