During his recent chat with the “St. Brown Podcast,” Sean revealed he was initially skeptical about the commercial appeal of his megahit, “I Don’t F**k With You.” He almost cut the track from his 2015 “Dark Sky Paradise.” The Detroit star shared a moment where he played the single for Beyoncé and Jay-Z at their home ahead of the album’s release. Bey thought the bold anthem was “a little disrespectful” and suggested adding Nicki Minaj to balance the tone, while Hov was all for it.
“Nah, it’s hard, though,” Sean recounted Hov telling him, adding, “People gonna get it that you just having fun.”
Sean recalled getting texts from the Roc Nation founder encouraging him to release the song.
“Every day you not putting that song out, you losing,” Hov’s message read.
Despite his initial doubts, Sean kept the track on the album, adding E-40 to the mix.
“I almost didn’t put it on the album. I thought it was a little dumb,” Sean confessed, but the song went on to reach number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, nearly achieving diamond status at 9x-platinum.
