A California man is now facing a murder charge after he assaulted and robbed a 75-year-old Asian man who later died from his injuries.
Oakland native Pak Ho was on his daily walk Tuesday morning when 26-year-old Teaunte Bailey approached him at the intersection of Jayne Avenue and Perkins Street, according to the Oakland Police Department, NBC News’ Wilson Wong reports.
Authorities said Ho was harmed and robbed after the two got into a dispute. Ho was immediate taken to the hospital; he suffered brain damage and eventually died from his injuries on Thursday. Police arrested Bailey in connection with assault and robbery, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said.
NBC reports that Bailey is now looking at charges of “special circumstance murder” and first-degree robbery and assault. According to the criminal complaint, special circumstances include crimes against elders, The Associated Press reports. “I’m at a loss for words,” Oakland police Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong said in a statement. “Our elders should be protected, not the victim of a deadly assault.”
Bailey reportedly “has a history of victimizing elderly Asian people,” according to the Oakland Police Department. On top of his robbery and assault charges, Bailey was previously accused of shoving a 72-year-old and stealing several items from the victim’s home.
Ho has three daughters who say they hope their father’s story will impact change. “It is always good to have a picture so people can relate to who they’re talking about,” Chan said. “It’s not just a name, but actually a physical person. Flesh and blood, so people understand that they’re actually human beings being hurt.”
