CDC Issues Warning of Salmonella in ProSource Onions Imported From Mexico, 37 States Affected

According to reports, a salmonella outbreak related to onions has spread to 37 states, affecting more than 650 individuals.

As of last night, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has ordered businesses to stop selling fresh whole red, white, or yellow onions sold by ProSource Inc imported by Chihuahua, Mexico.

The Agency has recommended businesses to disinfect all surface areas that have come in contact with the onions and to throw away any onions from the ProSource Inc brand with a labeled Mexico sticker.

ProSource Inc. claims that the suspected onions were last imported on August 27, but they can remain up to three months in storage and “may still be in homes and businesses.”

The CDC has reported that more than 650 people had become sick as a result of the outbreak, with over 130 of them being hospitalized, across 37 states as of Wednesday, however, the total number of people affected is likely to be substantially higher.

“If you can’t tell where the onions are from, don’t buy or eat them,” the CDC said in a statement.

So far the agency claims that no deaths have been linked to the salmonella outbreak.

The Agency is still investigating to see if “other onions and suppliers are linked” to the “fast-growing” outbreak.

According to the CDC, salmonella symptoms normally appear six hours to six days after infection, and most patients recover without therapy in four to seven days.

Diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and stomach pains are the main symptoms of the outbreak.

Individuals with an impaired immune system, children under the age of five, and individuals over the age of 65 are among those to be hospitalized.
