Chicago, the nation’s third largest city, seems to be kicking the year off on the wrong foot. We are only one month into the year of 2016, and Chicago has had ground breaking records of homicides throughout the city.
According to USA Today, Chicago has raked in 51 homicides in January, which is reportedly the most homicides Chicago has seen since 2000. Many of these homicides were gang conflicts and retaliatory violence. The Chicago Police Department faces increased scrutiny following the court-ordered release of a police officer shooting a teenager 16 times, who later died due to the occurrence.
Chicago is unfortunately no stranger to excessive violence, but the violence that took place this past month had a significant increase.
In addition to the heavy amount of killing, the police department said that it recorded 241 shooting incidents for the month, more than double the 119 incidents recorded last January. The police department is dedicated to putting new plans in place in the attempt to make the streets of Chicago safer.
