The NBA trade market just delivered another jolt, and this one reshapes two franchises heading in different directions. The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to trade James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Darius Garland and a future second-round pick. Both teams confirmed the deal on Wednesday, with ESPN first reporting that the trade was finalized.
Harden, now 36, heads back to the Eastern Conference during his most productive scoring season in six years. Through 44 games, the 11-time All-Star is averaging 25.4 points and 8.1 assists, numbers that helped steady the Clippers after a brutal 6- 21 start. His impact did not go unnoticed internally.
“He means a lot to our team, and we’ve seen it the last three years,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said Monday night as reports of the trade began to surface. “Who wouldn’t want to have James Harden?”
Cleveland adds Harden as a win now piece alongside Donovan Mitchell, creating one of the league’s most experienced backcourts. The move marks Harden’s sixth NBA stop after stints with Oklahoma City, Houston, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.
For the Clippers, the deal signals a pivot. Garland, 26, is a two-time All-Star averaging 18 points and 6.9 assists this season, giving LA a younger lead guard as it looks ahead.
Harden had re-signed with the Clippers last summer on a deal that effectively functioned as a one-year commitment, making this exit feel less shocking and more strategic.
