Dollar General

Greensburg - Circa November 2020: Dollar General Retail Location. Dollar General is a Small-Box Discount Retailer.

Instant coffee lovers might want to check their pantry. Dollar General has recalled its 8-oz. Clover Valley Instant Coffee after discovering it could contain glass fragments, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on August 11.

The coffee was sold in Dollar General stores across 48 states between July 9 and July 21. States affected include California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, and many others. The recalled product has a UPC of 876941004069 and comes from three specific lots: L-5163, L-5164, and L-5165, with best-by dates of December 13, 2026, and December 14, 2026.

According to the FDA, the potential contamination was discovered after a customer reported concerns to Dollar General. The agency warns that swallowing glass can cause “damage to teeth, laceration of the mouth and throat, or perforation of the intestine.” Fortunately, no injuries or illnesses have been reported as of August 12.

The company has not released an official public statement in response to the recall.
The FDA has recently been handling multiple food contamination cases. In late July, over 12,000 packages of Favorite Day Bakery Frosted Sugar Cookies were recalled due to potential wood contamination. That incident was classified as a Class II recall — the same classification likely applied here — which signals a situation where exposure may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, but the probability of serious harm is low.

Shoppers who purchased the recalled Clover Valley Instant Coffee are advised to stop using it immediately and return it to the store for a refund. The FDA stresses that even small glass particles can pose serious health risks, making this recall one to take seriously.
