Leonard ‘Hub’ Hubbard, Co-Founder of The Roots, Dies At 62

Bassist and co-founder of The Roots, Leonard “Hub” Hubbard passed away on Thursday.

According to Hubbard’s wife Stephanie, the legendary bass player died from complications from multiple myeloma. Hub was diagnosed with the blood cancer in 2007 but remained in remission until last month.

Stephanie says that Hub was very energetic in his last days but wasn’t able to move the day before he died. Stephanie took him to the hospital once things got worse but was unable to stay due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“I was called to the hospital. They told me what had happened that he had passed. I went to the hospital and was able to sit with him,” Stephanie says.

The remaining Roots members took to Instagram to share the news on their bandmate. The soup posted a black-and-white photo of the bassist and wrote a heartfelt caption.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we say goodbye to our brother Leonard Nelson Hubbard. May your transition bring peace to your family to your friends to your fans and all of those who loved you. Rest in Melody Hub.”

Hubbard recorded 7 albums and toured with the group but unfortunately stopped after his diagnosis. Though he did continue producing music and reunited with the band a few times.
Hubbard’s death come a little over a year after The Roots founding member Malik B. died at 47.
