Deion Sanders is making sure his Colorado Buffaloes understand the gravity of the target on his back as they enter the 2026 season.
During the team’s initial meeting of the year, Sanders’ head of security, Michael Rhodes, took center stage to reveal the staggering level of danger the head coach faces. According to Rhodes, “Coach Prime” is currently being targeted by five death threats every single day, a reality that has turned the football facility into a high-security zone.
The warning, captured in a video posted by Deion Sanders Jr., served as a blunt directive to the players to stop being lax with facility access. “I’m Officer Rhodes. I’m head of security for Coach Prime,” Rhodes told the roster. “Real quick, I want to say this. Those of y’all that are new, when y’all head up to the facilities in the morning, be mindful of who comes in with you, especially on the elevator. Don’t let somebody coerce you into scanning them up on the floor, because everybody’s trying to get to Coach Prime. Those people that are trying to get to them, not all of them have good intentions. So just be mindful of that, don’t prop open any doors, because my philosophy is, if the doors open, they will come through. Then they’re gonna have to meet me.”
Sanders, who followed Rhodes with his own remarks, explained that the constant vitriol is an unfortunate side effect of his success and identity. “We get death threats all the time,” Sanders said. “Why? I’m a Black man making it happen, making things move, making all that happen. So we have stuff that’s real.”
Rhodes has been a trusted member of Sanders’ inner circle since his days as a police officer at Jackson State, eventually moving to Boulder to serve as “private security to the head coach”.
By allowing the details of these threats to be discussed in a team setting, Sanders is emphasizing that the players have a role in maintaining a safe environment.
