College Bowl Games Cancelled Due to Surge in Covid-19 Cases

College bowl games have been canceled for the second year in a row due to the spike in coronavirus cases. Teams continue to bow out of bowl games because their rosters are depleted due to players opting out of games or injuries.

The Arizona Bowl was canceled Monday night due to a covid-19 outbreak. The game was set for Friday in Tuscan and was set to feature Boise State and Central Michigan before the Broncos announced they couldn’t travel due to the outbreaks within their program.

The Barstool Bowl also released a statement on Monday canceling the world-class Bowl. “Due to a spike within the participating athletic program, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl,” the statement read. “We would like to thank our conference partners and sponsors for their support.”

The statement concluded with the organization planning for the 2022 Arizona Bowl.

The Military Bowl and Wasabi Fenwat Bowl were both canceled because of Covid 19 issues on Sunday.

Steve Beck, the Military Bowl President, and Executive Director, released a statement on Twitter saying, “This is a terrible situation. Obviously, we appreciate everyone who worked so hard to try to make the game happen. Of course, the health and safety of the players and coaches is top priority. The decision not to play is understandable but disappointing.

Beck made the executive decision after Boston College was unable to field enough players to take on East Carolina in the Military Bowl, which had been set for Monday afternoon kickoff at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.

Due to the University of Virginia Cavaliers dropping out of the Fenway Bowl, the organization made the tough decision to cancel the Bowl entirely.

On Thursday, Hawaii backed out of its game against Memphis due to Covid-19 and injuries. As a result, the Hawaii Bowl was canceled.

Last Sunday, the University of Miami announced that it wouldn’t be able to field a team against Washington State in Friday’s Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas

Washington State, which had arrived in El Paso on Sunday before Miami’s statement, said it still hoped to find an opponent for Friday’s game.

“It is disappointing news that the University of Miami is unable to participate in the 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl,” the university said in a statement. “We will work with the Pac-12 Conference and the Sun Bowl Association to hopefully find a replacement opponent for the game.”
