The Young Dolph murder case still hasn’t reached its final chapter, and the hold-up comes down to one detail that refuses to get signed off.
Cornelius Smith, the self-admitted gunman, was expected to lock in his guilty plea back in February. Instead, things stalled when he and his legal team couldn’t agree on housing conditions tied to the deal. That same issue followed him right into his latest court date on March 30. So now, the case stays open a little longer.
A Memphis courtroom decided both sides need more time to iron things out, pushing Smith’s hearing to mid-May, according to FOX 13. The plea agreement itself is still on the table. However, that one unresolved detail continues to slow everything down. There have been reports that Smith may be pushing for solitary confinement for protection, though nothing official has confirmed that request. Still, given the weight of the crime and who it impacted, the concern isn’t hard to understand.
Young Dolph, who was gunned down on November 17, 2021, remains a deeply respected figure, and the case has carried that energy in every courtroom update.
Smith’s cooperation also adds another layer. He testified against Justin Johnson, who already received life plus 50 years. Earlier this month, Tennessee’s Court of Criminal Appeals upheld Johnson’s conviction, stating, “… The evidence of defendant’s guilt was overwhelming, and the prosecutor’s comments were brief.”
So while Smith may be hoping for some leniency, nothing is guaranteed.
