Daughter Shot Dead by Father After Argument About Trump

A family visit turned into an irreversible tragedy.

Lucy Harrison, a 23 year old fashion buyer from the UK, was shot and killed by her father while visiting him at his home in Prosper, Texas, according to BBC. The shooting happened after a heated argument about Donald Trump and gun ownership, according to testimony later heard at an inquest.

Lucy had traveled from England with her boyfriend to see her father and other relatives. They were scheduled to fly back home later that same day.

Earlier that morning, Lucy and her father argued intensely about Trump, who was preparing for his inauguration at the time, and about the fact that he owned a handgun. According to her boyfriend’s testimony, politics and guns were long standing points of tension between them.

The argument left Lucy visibly upset.

Not long after, her father took Lucy by the hand and led her into a bedroom. Seconds later, a gunshot rang out.

Lucy was found on the bedroom floor with a fatal gunshot wound to her chest.

Her father later told authorities he had been showing her a Glock handgun he kept in his bedside drawer. He claimed he did not realize the gun was loaded and said he did not know whether his finger was on the trigger when it discharged.

The gunshot killed Lucy instantly.

A US grand jury later reviewed the case and declined to indict her father, saying there was not enough evidence to bring criminal charges. The decision came despite the fact that Lucy and her father were alone in the room when the fatal shot was fired.

At the inquest in the UK, Lucy’s mother described her daughter as passionate, outspoken, and full of life. She said Lucy loved conversation, debate, and travel, and was excited about her future.

Instead, her life ended in a moment shaped by family conflict, access to a firearm, and an argument that never should have had fatal consequences.
