Dave Chappelle Says He’ll ‘Gladly Step Aside’ from High School Auditorium Honor If Critics Donate More Than Supporters

Dave Chappelle is fighting fire with fire when it comes to his haters. Though he has been under heat following his recent remarks about the LGBTQ company, his Netflix special The Closer still remains on the platform.

Following the heated controversies of whether Netflix should take down the special, he has received backlash from Netflix employees themselves and high school students at his alma mater. In his recent visit to Duke Ellington School, he says that there was a mix of emotions. He described as a mix of applause and boos when he visited this past Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Georgetown wants Dave Chapelle’s name on the front of their auditorium. Since Dave Chapelle has received heavy criticism, the theatre namming has been postponed until April.

Well, Chapelle is playing smarter not harder. He wants his critics to donate more than his fans in order for him to decline the name induction.

According to Fox News, in a recent Instagram post, he says, “Talk is cheap (Unless I do it)…having the theater named after me is a great honor. Although, that was not my idea, aim or desire.”

He then continues, “At the request of our beloved school’s founder Peggy Cooper Cafritz, I accepted,” he continued. “In April, I intend to honor that request. If you object to my receiving this honor, I urge you to donate to the school, noting your objection. If you are in favor of the theater being named, ‘Chappelle,’ I urge you to donate to the school, noting your approval.”

“If by April, those against the Chappelle theater exceed the donations of those who are neutral or in favor of the theater named Chappelle, I will gladly step aside. If not, I will happily attend the naming ceremony. And if you don’t care enough to donate… please, shut the f*** up, forever,” Chappelle concluded, signing the comment “Dave.”

It looks like he is trying to outweigh if fans support him enough or if his critics hate him enough to donate. Many students expressed their concerns over his name associated with the theatre and fired him with questions at the event.

One student said, “I’m 16 and I think you’re childish, you handled it like a child.” Politico Playbook reported after speaking with attendees at the Chapelle event. The student called Chapelle “bigot” as well.
