The Disney OpenAI deal collapse is already sending ripples through Hollywood and tech circles.
OpenAI confirmed it is shutting down its Sora AI video app just months after launch, catching creators and studios off guard.
“We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built a community around it: thank you,” the company said in a statement. “What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.”
Because Sora played a key role in Disney’s AI plans, the shutdown quickly changed the energy around their partnership. A source familiar with the situation confirmed Disney is now exiting the billion-dollar investment deal it signed with OpenAI last year, which included licensing select characters for use on the platform.
Disney addressed the shift directly, saying, “As the nascent AI field advances rapidly, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere.” The company also added, “We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”
However, OpenAI is not stepping away from AI video entirely, as the technology may still live inside broader tools. So while Sora fades out, the bigger AI race is far from over.
