Dominicans have become the talk of Twitter after several Dominicans on Dyckman street began running off Black protestors.
The hashtag #Dominicans has begun trending after a video on Twitter showed Dominican residents harassing a group of Black male protestors for being in their neighborhood. The video was shot in the Inwood section of uptown Manhattan, on Dyckman street. The men then start yelling for the men to leave. “You got to get the f&#k out the neighborhood,” one man said. “You better get that sh*t out of here nigga,” said another. Throughout the video, the “n-word” is hurled at the Black men.
Both groups flee the street after what may have been rubber bullet gunshots were heard. Police vans can then be seen blocking the street.
The viral video ignited a conversation amongst the Latinx and Black community, highlighting the ongoing battle Dominicans have with their race and ethnicity. While not all Dominicans are Black, a great portion of the community has Black roots. The Source reports that the Dominican Republic is the only country in Latin America that got its freedom from Haiti. After gaining its independence from France in the 1800s, it took over the island of Hispaniola. Throughout history, the two communities have been pinned against one another with Blacks typically being depicted as negative or bad.
Another thinking point that came from the video was the difference in the support that other races receive from the Black community versus the support the Black community is given from others. “Dominicans who don’t accept the fact our roots are black is because Trujillo taught our parents to hate the Haitians with fear and taught us to do the same,” one Twitter user wrote.
Luckily, many online know their history and are proud of their Black lineage. “Look at my family!!! WE BLACK!!!! Dominicans Por favor!!!! Please understand the difference between RACE & ETHNICITY!!!!! Dios mio,” another user wrote.

Case and point as to why I don’t travel to the DR or send my clients to the DR. They clearly think they aren’t black and they are. They love to down African Americans to make them forget their black heritage but they love our culture. The island suffered last year and this year with tourism. They will not get another penny from us. This message will be broadcast to all my fellow travel agents too. #boycottdr #byedominicans
Lashawn, STF up forever dummy. We Dominicans don’t deny our African heritage. We love our culture to the fullest. Hip Hop started in the BX by both Blacks and Hispanics. It didn’t start in Mississippi. I hate chitlings and pig feet. I don’t listen to Mahalia Jackson, Jazz music or Gospel music. Those looters in NYC, mostly black are not solving any problems.
