Top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci will “absolutely” accept President-elect Joe Biden’s offer to become the new chief medical adviser under the Biden administration.
Fauci told Savannah Guthrie of the Today Show that he “said yes right on the spot.”
Biden revealed during his interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper that he had asked Fauci to remain on the coronavirus task force under his administration, “I asked him to stay on in the exact same role as he’s had for the past several presidents, and I asked him to be a chief medical adviser for me as well and be part of the Covid-19 team,” he said.
It was a very controversial relationship between Trump and Fauci that unfolded before the public, as they disagreed on the novel pandemic. In November, Trump threatened to fire Fauci, who had contradicted Trump on the issue of masks, social distancing, and public gatherings, The Guardian reported.
It was Biden who favored Fauci, encouraging Americans to follow the guidance of the expert. Biden said he and Fauci discussed him staying on board. Biden feels Fauci is an important piece of gaining America’s confidence when it comes to fighting the pandemic and gaining trust when it comes to vaccines.
He also said he doesn’t feel like he will have to close down the economy to lessen the spread, although cases continue to surge across the nation during the holiday season.
Incoming White House chief of staff, Ron Klain, applauded Fauci for his achievements and hard work during the novel virus in a tweet that said, “There are few public servants in our history who have served as long and as well and with as much distinction at Dr. Tony Fauci. It will be a great honor to work with him again.”
Fauci has warned the nation could have a “terrible” January as the country set three grim coronavirus records on Thursday –the highest daily number of coronavirus deaths, the highest number of new cases, and as the number of people admitted to hospital with Covid exceeded 100,000 for the second day in a row.
