Charles Barkley and Draymond Green address their seemingly long-standing beef, and Dwyane Wade discusses his support of Nick Cannon.
The Arena is TNT’s new nightly show that was launched on Monday, just ahead of the NBA season, and its first episode already covered several topics. The show is hosted by Cari Champion and features Barkley, Wade, and Green as a panel. The show focuses primarily on the ins and outs of the basketball world, but will also tackle issues including race, the #coronavirus, the #BlackLivesMatter movement and more, according to USA Today.
To get started, Green and Barkley first had to address their strenuous relationship. “I’ve said many times, I like Draymond, I do,” said Barkley. “He does annoy me at times on the court.” In response, Green said, “The issue I’ve had is, a lot of people watch the game of basketball, and they don’t know what they’re looking at. So when they look at a Chuck, or they look at different guys who have this platform, they take what you’re saying, and they listen to that, and they run with that,” he added. “For me, it hasn’t necessarily affected my pockets, but there are a lot of guys in this league that people run with what guys say on these platforms, and it affects guys’ pockets, and that’s the issue I’ve had.”
Wade then addressed his former support for #NickCannon, who was fired by Viacom/CBS over alleged anti-Semitic comments he made during his podcast. “We are with you” and “Keep leading!” he initially wrote. Since then, he says that he has learned from friends about his previous beliefs. “I got some education from friends that I appreciate, and I thank you, guys. If anybody felt that I was supporting hate speech, that’s not who I am, that’s not my character, but I will support another Black man that in America get thrown away all the time,” Wade said.
Later on, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich sat down for the program and discussed his concerns about restarting the season amid the rapidly growing #Covid19. “I don’t want to die. I wear my mask all the time, I took it off to talk to you guys. It behooves each of us who might be a little bit older to take it very seriously. I wear my mask in practice, and I only take it off when I got something to say. Because I am concerned.”
