Elon Musk and California Governor Gavin Newsom just turned a policy debate into a deeply personal public clash, and it escalated fast. The moment started after the official Governor Newsom Press Office account reposted a clip of Newsom discussing his record on trans rights and added a pointed comment aimed at Musk that read, “Correct. We’re sorry your daughter hates you, Elon.” The debate over Elon Musk transgender daughter issues became the center of the latest political fight.
That line instantly set off backlash and pulled Musk directly into the conversation. Elon responded publicly on X, saying he assumed the comment was referring to his transgender daughter, Vivian, who was previously known as Xavier. In his response, Musk claimed his daughter suffers from what he called a “tragic mental illness” caused by what he repeatedly describes as the “woke mind virus.” He added that he loves his child and hopes she recovers, while accusing Democratic leaders and progressives of pushing harmful ideology on vulnerable children.

Musk went on to clarify that he has three daughters and stated that they do love him, pushing back against the idea that his family relationships are fractured across the board. Still, the damage was already done. What began as a political jab from a governor’s press office quickly became a viral moment centered on Musk’s transgender child and his controversial views on gender identity.
This exchange did not come out of nowhere. Newsom has long positioned himself as one of the most vocal governors supporting LGBTQ and trans protections, while Musk has increasingly aligned himself with right wing culture war rhetoric, frequently attacking what he labels as “woke ideology.” Musk has also spoken publicly before about his strained relationship with Vivian, who legally changed her name and gender and has said she wants no connection to him.
