The family of the man who passed away in a jail cell infested with bed bugs last year has finally reached a $4 million settlement with Fulton County officials.
On Wednesday, the County Commissioners voted 6-0 in favor of the settlement linked to LaShawn Thompson, 35.
Attorneys for his family contended that he was “consumed by bed bugs,” contributing to his death in the Fulton County Jail on Sept. 13, 2022.
“The Fulton County Commissioners’ vote speaks for itself,” said Attorney Michael Harper.
It was previously reported that Thompson was arrested on June 12, 2022, for a minor assault on police officers. After his death, images of him covered in bed bugs and his filthy cell spread on social media, leading to public outrage.
Last month, The U.S. Department of Justice launched a civil investigation into the Fulton County jail system following a series of reports of inmate abuse and neglect, including the death of Thompson.
