Pet owners are being urged to double check their pantry shelves after federal regulators moved to pull certain dog treats from store shelves over contamination concerns.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed that Consumers Supply Distributing, LLC has issued a voluntary recall of specific dog biscuits after testing indicated a possible presence of salmonella. The Iowa based distributor said the recall applies to products sold in seven states and could present health risks to both animals and the people who handle the treats.
Salmonella infections can cause a range of symptoms in humans, including stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and fever. In uncommon cases, the FDA notes that infections may lead to more serious complications such as joint inflammation, heart related infections, muscle pain and arterial issues. Dogs exposed to salmonella may show signs such as low energy, vomiting, fever or diarrhea, though some animals may carry the bacteria without appearing sick.
Officials stressed that human infections can occur through direct contact with contaminated pet food, particularly if proper hand washing does not take place after feeding or handling the biscuits. Asymptomatic pets may also spread salmonella to other animals or people in the home.
The recalled items were sold at retail locations in Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Iowa, Texas, Montana and Nebraska. Products affected include Country Vet Biscuits Original Meaty Flavor and Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits. Both were packaged in four pound bags, carry the lot code 40906513 and have a listed expiration date of September 6, 2026.
The FDA reported that no illnesses have been linked to the recalled products at this time. The issue was uncovered during routine product sampling, leading the company to halt production while further testing and review are conducted.
