It is time to take your wellness seriously because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has officially sounded the alarm on a brutal flu season.
As of January 2, 2026, the latest data reveals that flu related deaths and hospitalizations are trending upward at an alarming rate. We are currently looking at over seven million flu cases nationwide this season, which have already resulted in an estimated 81,000 hospitalizations and 3,100 deaths.
The situation escalated quickly during the holiday season, with nearly 20,000 people hospitalized in the week ending December 20, 2025, marking a staggering increase of over 9,000 cases compared to just seven days prior.
The impact on children has been particularly devastating as the year came to a close. Five influenza related pediatric deaths were reported in the second to last week of 2025, bringing the total number of reported pediatric lives lost this season to eight.
Health officials have made it clear that seasonal influenza activity is elevated and continues to climb in almost every corner of the country. This surge is being driven by a specific variant of Influenza A (H3N2) known as subclade K, a strain that was first identified in Australia over the summer before making its way to the U.S.
While the subclade K variant may not be more physically severe than previous strains, medical experts warn that humans do not have the same level of natural immunity to it.
Florian Krammer, a respected virologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, noted that this lack of immunity is allowing the virus to move through the population with incredible speed. Because the variant emerged after this year’s flu vaccine was already in production, there were early concerns about how effective the shot would be.
However, preliminary data from the U.K. suggests that the current vaccine is still performing on par with past years and remains the most effective tool for staying out of the hospital.
Despite the mounting risks and the clear benefits of the shot, the vast majority of Americans are still unprotected. The CDC reported that as of December 13, 2025, only 42.2% of the population had bothered to get their flu vaccine.
With the virus expected to continue its upward march throughout the winter months, doctors are urging everyone to get vaccinated immediately to avoid severe illness or worse.
