Football Legend John Madden Passes Away at 85

Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and football broadcaster John Madden has passed away at 85.

The NFL announced the news Tuesday sharing that the former Raiders coach died unexpectedly this morning.

“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.”

Madden was hired as Oakland Raider’s head coach in 1969 at the age of 32. Before retiring from the field, he led the team to a 103-32-7 regular-season record and victory in the Super Bowl after the 1976 season. He was shrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, 28 years after coaching his final game. The Hall of Famer gained even more notoriety as an NFL broadcaster and for the video game bearing his name, EA Sports’ “Madden NFL.”
