A resurfaced interview between Future and Nessa on Hot 97 is currently making the rounds, and it’s offering a deeper understanding of the experiences that shaped the man who has essentially become the face of “toxic” relationships.
During the sit-down, when Nessa asked what he would say is his biggest regret, Future took a rare moment of vulnerability to reflect on his emotional shortcomings. “My biggest regret probably is that I should love harder,” Future admitted, explaining that he wished he had “found a way to love the right way.” He painted a picture of a man who was essentially flying blind in his personal life, noting that he “comes from nothing” and never had a male role model to “show him how to open the door for a woman or just that they really like flowers.”
This candid admission makes so much sense when looking at the multiple relationships and public situations Future has been in over the years. It’s easy to look at his history from the outside and judge, but hearing him explain that he “never seen his mom get flowers” adds a layer of generational trauma to the narrative. He described a cycle where he is forced to learn “through failed relationships how to treat the next women,” essentially having to learn the basics of a healthy partnership through trial and error, but the cost of that education has been a string of broken hearts and broken homes.
Instead of just using his upbringing as a convenient excuse, he’s acknowledging that “people not understanding that and understanding the lifestyle that comes but also understanding his mentality from the streets” is where the disconnect usually happens.
Now that Future is 42, seeing this clip resurface makes so much sense regarding the multiple relationships and public breakups he’s experienced throughout his career. While his music often celebrates the chaos of his love life, this viral clip proves that underneath the designer fashions and the street mentality, there’s a guy who knows he missed out on the fundamentals of romance.
