Gavin Newsom is speaking out after Halle Berry publicly criticized his decision to veto a key women’s health bill. The California governor says Berry didn’t have all the facts before accusing him of “devaluing” women by rejecting the Menopause Care Equity Act.
The bill aimed to expand menopause-related care by requiring better medical training and insurance coverage. After Newsom vetoed it twice, Berry voiced frustration at the New York Times DealBook Summit, saying his actions sidelined the needs of mid-life women. She even questioned his fitness for higher office.
But Newsom, speaking a day later to reporters, offered a different view. He revealed that his administration is already working to include funding for menopause care in the upcoming state budget.
“She didn’t know that,” he said. “We’re reconciling.”
His office said the original bill could have raised healthcare costs, and that adjustments are being made to address the issue responsibly. Newsom expressed respect for Berry’s advocacy and emphasized his commitment to improving women’s health access.
Berry has been a strong voice on the topic, using her platform to highlight the lack of support for women experiencing menopause. Through her company Respin Health, she’s been pushing for change and greater visibility.
