If you have been holding onto an outdated or unprofessional Gmail address because you were afraid of losing your data, your luck has finally changed.
Google has officially launched a feature that allows users to swap their current Gmail handle for a new one without needing to create a separate account or manually migrate years of files.
The announcement was confirmed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who acknowledged that many users are still tied to usernames they created decades ago.
“2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn’t need to be stuck in it,” Pichai wrote on X. He encouraged users to move on from their early digital identities, noting, “To say goodbye to v0t3f0rp3dr02004@gmail.com or mrbrightside416@gmail.com (or whatever you were into at the time), go to your Google Account settings and choose any name available. You’ll keep your old username and you can sign in with both.”
The transition is designed to be seamless. Google ensures that all your photos, documents, and emails remain in your account, and any messages sent to your original address will still arrive in your new inbox. Additionally, you can continue using both your old and new credentials to sign in to Google services like Drive, YouTube, and Maps.
To see if this option is ready for your account, follow these steps:
• Click on your profile photo or initials in the top right-hand corner of your Gmail screen.
• Select “Manage your Google Account.”
• Click on “Personal info” on the left sidebar.
• Select the “Email” section.
• If available, you will see an option to change your Google account email.
While this update offers much-needed flexibility, there are a few limitations to keep in mind. You can change your address up to three times per lifetime, but you are limited to one swap per year. Furthermore, while you can switch back to your previous address whenever you want, you are prohibited from creating a new @gmail.com email account for 12 months after making a change.
Check your account settings today to see if you can finally update your professional image.
