Good Samaritan Dies On New Year’s Day, Tried To Save Man Who Fell On Subway Tracks During Gang Assault

A good Samaritan who was trying to help an assault victim who had fallen on the subway tracks during the assault died on New Year’s Day in New York City.

In the early hours of New Year’s day, the assault victim, who was identified as a 38-year-old male, was approached by a group of individuals while on the southbound B/D train platform in the Fordham Road subway station in the Bronx, the New York City Police Department said in a statement.

CNN reported that the gang “displayed a knife and began assaulting him,” who eventually landed on the subway tracks.

It remains unclear if the victim fell or was pushed.

A 36-year-old witness went on the tracks to help the victim but unfortunately was “subsequently struck by the oncoming train, causing his death,” police added.

The train didn’t strike the assault victim, but he sought treatment for a fractured arm at a local hospital and was released.

Police reported that the suspected gang left the scene in unknown directions but have released surveillance photos from the incident with hopes of getting public help in identifying the suspects.

The subway station is located on 188th Street and falls under the 46th precinct. According to city data, the precinct has seen 34 felonious assaults in the past 28 days.
