Hey Fellas, Here’s The Real Reason We Wear Weave

It has come to my attention that men are more concerned about women’s hair care than us women are. Supposedly straight men (straight men who supposedly aren’t hair dressers) for some reason are so concerned about our hair texture, hair color and why women choose to wear weave that they have tweeted about it, posted youtube videos and raged on Facebook. I never knew that man could be so concerned about something that has nothing to do with them — until now. Well fortunately for you fellas, here is a breakdown as to why women wear weave.

First of all, women aren’t wearing weaves because we want to be European. If that is the case, why are European and Spanish women wearing weaves? Do they want to be black women who want to be European? Can you see how asinine that sounds? Women wear weave for versatility. We love the option of going from short, to long, from black, to blonde without the worries of damaging our natural hair. I mean, how else can I rock fire engine red tresses while my natural hair remains nestled comfortably untouched. See, I haven’t had to put a relaxer in my hair for about a year now. So while my hair is growing beautifully, avoiding heat, chemicals and other damaging products, I am out here working this beautiful 26 inch sew in. Get your life!

That leads me into my next point. Women wear weaves for protection. Not every woman with a sew in or a wig is wearing one because she is bald. Sad misconception that some He-Man-Black-Woman-Hater told you. In fact, because of the amount of protection a woman gets by wearing a weave, most women who wear weaves are able to grow their hair out at a rapid pace. Imagine not having to apply heat to your hair day in and day out or not having to tug at it and pull it ALL the time. Don’t be fools, many women wit the longest weaves have equally long hair and simply wear a weave to maintain that.

I personally wear a weave for the manageability. My hair and humidity don’t play well. It just so happens I always live in the most humid areas. Do I want to put curls in my hair and it fall or put curls in my weave and it stays a while longer? Do I want to fuss with my hair today or just shake and go? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the obvious choice would be a weave in this case. The slightest change in weather puffs up my hair. I simply can’t be bothered.

Sometimes we want a different texture. I don’t have kinky hair but if I want kinky hair I know that it is just a hair store away. Sometimes I want big curls, body waves, tight curls or bone straight and guess what, I can afford to have all of those things. Do we wear weave for length? Yes. Manageability? Absolutely! Some girls may even want a new look, but that does NOT mean that we hate our heritage and have a low self esteem. Black women aren’t even the primary race to wear weave. Other women wear it too, they just call it extensions. Paris Hilton has been running around here with Brazilian hair in her head for years and I have yet to hear some fool say “She’s trying to be European”. Again, do you know why? Because that is stupid. If I wanted to be another ethnicity, I would have to change more than my hair to do so. I have an African name and African skin honey, no one is buying that I’m European just because I have 26 inch hair in. In fact, my hair doesn’t even come from Europe so if ANYTHING wouldn’t you say I want to be Brazilian, Indian, Peruvian or Malaysian? Clearly I’m not wearing my French hair today and I think my Belgium hair is still in the mail.

Some of you men wouldn’t even date a natural haired sista because you think she’s too “afro-centric” yet want to police how much or how little weave I put in mine. You lust over women with hair down their butt but say that YOUR girlfriend can’t wear weave. If you’re so concerned about women’s hair, you should get into cosmetology, better yet, put in the funds for my hair’s upkeep. Please, don’t think for one second that we honestly care about what you think and that we are saying ANY form of hair is wrong. From dreadlocks to extensions, what women do with our hair is none of your business.

Why is it that only black women have low self esteem when we wear weaves or only black women want to be a race that we aren’t? Asians, Spanish women and even Caucasian women have been competing with us in the weave world for YEARS. In fact, they are buying their hair and getting it installed by black stylists because it’s cheaper. So thank you men for your theories on why women wear weaves, but you’re entirely off base. Stick to things that straight men should be talking about like Sports, cars and Finances. Stay out of women’s discussions about beauty products and hair care.

You look gay.
