‘Historic’ Large, Rare Pink Diamond From Angolan Mines To Be Auctioned Off By Australian-Based Company

An Australian-based company plans to auction off a rare, large pink diamond from mines located in Angola.

What may be the largest pink diamond ever to be found in years is now in possession of Lucapa Diamond Company, an Australian-based diamond company that works in partnership with state-run diamond miner Endiama and Rosas & Petalas, a private Angolan company.

Sitting at 170 carats, the “Lulo Rose” is now the fifth largest diamond found at the mine. “Only one in 10,000 diamonds is colored pink. So you’re certainly looking at a very rare article when you find a very large pink diamond,” said Lucapa CEO Stephen Wetherall in an interview with the Associated Press.

The Lucapa company is looking for underground deposits, which are known as kimberlite pipes, which are the main source of the diamonds, NBC News reports. “When you find these high-value large diamonds … it certainly elevates the excitement from our perspective in our hunt for the primary source,” said Wetherall.

There are no details on how much the diamond will be valued.
