Ilie Nastase Says Serena Williams Comments Weren’t Racist, “If I said she would have an ugly, black (baby), that would have been racist”

Amid the rising controversy surrounding Ilie Nastase’s comments about Serena Williams’ unborn baby, the Romanian Fed Cup captain questioned the motives of the media, wondering if their sole intent was to spark scandal and controversy. He also addressed Williams’ response to his “chocolate with milk” statement with the Associated Press, saying “Anything I say, I am the bad boy.”

“Why write a news story like this?” Nastase asked as the Fed Cup series against Britain approaches. “Just to have a scandal? There are many more important things going on,” he said in a telephone interview.

In a separate interview with a Romanian website, Nastase denied that his comments about Williams’ baby were racist, saying “If I said she would have an ugly, black (baby), that would have been racist,” he said.
