Instagram Internally Testing “Latest Post” Chronological Order Prototype

Instagram might be giving us what we’ve all been waiting on: chronological order for our posts!

According to ABC 7, the social media giant is considering bringing back a version of its chronological timeline. The news broke after Twitter user Jane Manchun Wong tweeted, “Instagram is working on “Latest Posts” feed for catching up feed posts. This sounds like the chronological feed people are asking for. Similar, but not the same.” Manchun Wong is known for reverse engineering apps for hidden features and security and posted a photo of IG’s original chronological timeline screen.

While Instagram has yet to confirm if it will be rolling the feature back, the app does appear to be internally testing it out. Manchun Wong discovered the new feature in the code, according to Adweek. Facebook’s communications manager for engineering in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Alexandru Voica, responded in a tweet, “Another great find, thanks for sharing it. For those who are keen to know how this was developed, it’s an early prototype from a recent hackathon (a Facebook tradition). It is not currently available to anyone publicly, and we have no plans to test or launch it at this time.”

Manchun Wong went on to say that Instagram is looking to introduce a “Latest Posts” feature, which would reportedly be similar to the initial chronological feed option that was removed in 2019. The new chronological feature would be equipped with a “get caught up” option that would take users to another page that shows the latest photos and videos from their Instagram community. If users choose “not now,” it will keep users on the standard algorithm-based timeline, according to TheVersed.com.

“It is not available to anyone publicly, and we have no plans to test or launch it at this time,” said Alexandru Voica, an associate on Instagram’s communications team.
