Serial Sperm Donor Sued For Increasing Incest Risk After Fathering 550 Children

An international sperm donor, who has fathered about 550 children, is being sued for allegedly raising the risk of accidental incest.
In 2017, Dutch musician Jonathan Jacob Meijer, 41, provided sperm to at least 13 clinics, including 11 in the Netherlands, where he was blacklisted for having fathered 102 children.
According to the Times of London, Dutch guidelines restrict donors from having more than 25 children or impregnating more than 12 women.  This is to prevent inbreeding, incest, or mental health problems for the children.
The Dutch DonorKind Foundation has filed a civil lawsuit against Meijer, who lives in Kenya and donates his sperm outside the Netherlands, including to Denmark and Ukraine.
In its complaint, the group claims that the serial donor lied about how many children he had.

“We are taking action against this man because the government is doing nothing,” said DonorKind Chairman Ties van der Meer.

“He has a global reach via the internet, and he does business with large, international sperm banks,” he added.

A Dutch woman who gave birth to one of Meijer’s children in 2018 filed the lawsuit.

“If I had known he had already fathered more than 100 children, I would never have chosen this donor,” said the woman identified as Eva.

“When I think about the consequences this could have for my child, I am sick to my stomach.  Going to court is the only way to protect my child,” she added.

According to DonorKind attorney Mark de Hek, the court action was initiated after multiple women asked Meijer not to donate sperm anymore.

“We and some of the mothers have approached him.  They have asked him to stop.  He refused.  This is why legal action is the only option to protect children,” he said.

A court order will be sought to prevent Meijer from donating and have his stored sperm destroyed – unless it’s to be used by a woman who has already given birth to a Meijer child.
It was reported in the Times of London that an Australian couple paid more than $6,500 to the Danish fertility clinic Cryos International for his sperm.

“We chose him because he was worldly, creative, and very intelligent,” the Australian mother said.  “He was open to meeting his donor children, and he looks like my partner.”

She added, “He won’t be stopped.  I think it’s disgusting, and I’m incredibly angry and disappointed.  I can’t believe I have to tell my child that he has hundreds of siblings.”

According to the outlet, the man’s sperm complied with Australian regulations that limit donors to inseminating five families.

Meijer allegedly produced a “motivation letter” for the Danish sperm bank under a pseudonym in which he claimed he wanted to support people in achieving their parental goals.

He recently told reporters, “I like to see that there are children of mine all over the world.”
