Irene Cara, the award-winning singer, best known for singing the title tracks to Flashdance and Fame has passed away. She was 63.

Cara’s death was confirmed by her publicist, Judith A. Moose, who posted a statement to the singer’s Twitter account on Saturday.

“It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announced the passing of Irene Cara,” she wrote. “The Academy Award winning actress, singer, songwriter, and producer passed away in her Florida home.”

According to Moose’s statement, the singer’s cause of death is unknown at this time. Once that information is known, it will be released to the public.

She asked for privacy on behalf of the family and explained that funeral services are being planned and a memorial will be planned for Cara’s fans in the future.

The singer, songwriter, and actress rose to fame in the 1980 musical Fame. Her performance earned her two Grammy nominations for best pop vocal and best new artist in 1981.

Cara sang and co-wrote the title track for 1983s Flashdance, earning the star an Academy Award for Best Original Song. “Flashdance… What A Feeling” also earned Cara two Grammy wins at the 26th Annual Grammy Awards in 1984.

In a follow-up tweet, Cara’s publicist revealed the singer was working on upcoming projects. Moose said she would work with Cara’s business manager to see that they are completed.
