It’s The Holidays, Time To Meet The Parents

I can’t speak for everyone else but if anything makes me nervous it’s meeting the significant other’s family for the first time, more specifically during the holidays. During the holidays it’s the toughest because you will be around a large amount of family at once. That’s a lot to take in on your first meeting. There will be a lot of pressure to keep things positive but lets face it, some people will just not like you and no matter how much they want to push your buttons, you can’t allow them to get you riled up because you will be to blame for ruining the day. Girlfriends and boyfriends come and go. Family is forever.

So how do you make sure that you’re a hit with the parents? Here are a few easy steps:

Always Smile: You don’t want your lack of smiling to be misinterpreted as you having a bad attitude. It’s a known fact that a smile can make a person appear more warm and inviting and if anything else, it will a great mask to hide your nervousness.

Dress Appropriately: This is probably the most important tip of them all. If you don’t own a skirt that reaches past mid thigh at minimum, then you should probably opt for pants. Try to keep the goodies covered up as much as possible upon first meeting the family. Be respectful of the children and elders in the family. First impressions are everything!

Avoid Discussions On Religion, Marriage & Politics: These are hot topics that if you answer the wrong way can result in World War III. If the family is having a discussion on any of these things it’s best to keep out of it. Don’t chime in unless you’re asked and even if you are asked, try to defer the conversation to something else.

Fix Your Boo’s Plate: This is a key way to win over the family. If you’re dating their “baby” it always earns you brownie points to fix him a plate. If his family is old fashioned, this will show that you were raised with good manners and from a good home. If they’re not old fashioned, it shows that you love and care about him enough to take care of him first. Men, you can do the same for your girl.

Keep The PDA To A Minimum: Don’t gross his family out by having your tongue down his throat and your hands on his crotch. Save the nasty stuff for when you guys are home alone. Show that you are a lady and not some hoe he picked up off the street before he came home for Thanksgiving.
