While Morgan Freeman is widely celebrated for a voice that seems to command the room, he wants the world to know that his legendary sound was earned through hard work, not just luck.
During a Friday appearance on CBS Mornings, the Oscar winner addressed the growing problem of artificial intelligence being used to replicate his vocal likeness. “I’ve got lawyers.” He confirmed that his legal team is already active, working to “tamp that down” as unauthorized digital versions of his voice continue to circulate online.
The actor’s frustration stems from the fact that he spent years studying to achieve his signature delivery. He explained that his deep, distinct tone came from intentional effort, rather than being a natural gift he was born with. “I went to school and studied voice and diction,” Freeman shared, noting that simple physical techniques like yawning can help relax the throat to create a deeper, more resonant sound. Because he views his voice as a professional instrument, he considers AI impersonation a form of financial theft.
In an interview with The Guardian, he was even more direct, “Don’t mimic me with falseness. I get paid for doing stuff like that, so if you’re gonna do it without me, you’re robbing me.”
Despite his legal battle against unauthorized clones, Freeman isn’t completely opposed to the technology if it involves a fair contract. He recalled a past situation where a company paid him for the permission to use a voice actor who sounded like him. When asked if compensation makes the difference, he replied, “Yeah, that works.”
However, he expressed serious concerns about the rise of AI actors and the overall impact of digital performers in the industry. He believes that replacing human talent with artificial alternatives could create lasting tension within the business.
While he appreciates what technology can do for visual storytelling, he is making it clear that his voice is not a free resource for AI developers to exploit.
Morgan Freeman says he isn’t willing to let companies use AI to replicate or mimic his ICONIC voice without fair compensation, revealing his lawyers are already working to stop those who’ve tried 😳🎙️👀

Good for you, Mr.Morgan Freeman. I hope your lawyers, and you, can “stick it in their ___ and BREAK IT OFF “! I’m not an actor or lawyer, but I have always been a fan of your work. I am an artist and photographer so I have gone to great lengths to create and protect my work, and would be greatly hurt if some faceless entity could “steal” work from me !
