That’s Baller: Jalen Hurts Becomes The Highest-Paid NFL Player In History

On Monday, news broke that Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts had signed a massive deal with the team, which makes him the highest-paid football player of all time.

As reported by NFL expert Ian Rapoport, the quarterback’s five-year deal is worth a staggering $255 million. In a tweet shared Monday morning, Rapoport reported that NFL agent and attorney Nicole Lynn had secured the deal.

The contract will take Hurts through the 2028 season. It guarantees him $179.3 million and includes a no-trade clause. The contract tops that of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who previously held the highest-paid spot. Hurts also made history in other facets of his career this year. He became just the eighth Black quarterback in NFL history to start in a Super Bowl. He and Patrick Mahomes also became the league’s first two Black starting quarterbacks to play in a Super Bowl simultaneously.

Hurts was picked in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. Throughout his professional career, the 24-year-old has amassed 7,906 passing yards, 44 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. The Eagles won an impressive 14 games last season.

In his Essence Men’s edition cover story, unveiled before his latest salary news, Hurts says he always saw such a fate for himself.

“I always knew what I’d be. As a kid, I always knew. I never knew how I’d get there, but I always knew what I wanted,” he told the publication.
