James Ransone, the actor who brought depth and unpredictability to the famed character Ziggy Sobotka on HBO’s “The Wire,” has died at the age of 46.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that Ransone died by suicide on December 19 in Los Angeles. Official records list the cause of death as hanging, with the location noted as a shed. Authorities have not released further details surrounding the circumstances.
In a 2016 interview with Interview Magazine, he spoke openly about his sobriety and the misconceptions surrounding it.
“People think I got sober working on the ‘Generation Kill.’ I didn’t,” he said at the time. Ransone revealed he became sober at 27 after using heroin for five years, explaining that the responsibility of major acting roles initially felt overwhelming. “I think somebody made a mistake. This is too much responsibility for me,” he recalled.
Years later, in 2021, Ransone shared another deeply personal chapter of his life in a lengthy Instagram post that has since been deleted. In the message, he alleged that he was sexually abused as a child by a former tutor, Timothy Rualo, over a six-month period in 1992. According to the post, the alleged abuse contributed to long-term struggles with substance use and mental health.
Outside of “The Wire,” Ransone built a respected career across television and film. His credits included “Generation Kill,” “Treme,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Hawaii Five-0,” and starred in the horror sequel “It: Chapter Two.” His final on-screen appearance aired in June on “Poker Face.”
Ransone is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and their two children. Shortly after his passing, Jamie penned a touching message online.
“I told you I have loved you 1000 times before, and I know I will love you again,” Jamie wrote on Instagram.
