In a surprising revelation, Janet Jackson stated that Kamala Harris’ father is white.
During an interview with The Guardian, the pop icon was asked how she felt about Harris possibly becoming the first Black woman president. However, Jackson quickly corrected the notion, stating that Harris was not actually Black.
“She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian,” Jackson told interviewer Nosheen Iqbal before adding, “Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white.”
Harris’ father, Donald J. Harris, was a Jamaican economist and Stanford professor. He was raised in Jamaica but came to the U.S. to pursue his education. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, was a biomedical scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She relocated to the United States from India at age 19. The VP has long been open about her roots, which many political figures, including Donald Trump, continue to dissect and criticize.
After Iqbal informed Jackson about Harris’ parents and ethnicity, she asked the “That’s the Way Love Goes” star whether she believed America was ready for a woman of color in office. However, Jackson chose to distance herself from the question altogether.
“Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem. I think there might be mayhem. Either way it goes, but we’ll have to see.”
