Years after the viral elevator video shook the internet, the truth behind Jay-Z and Solange Knowles’ infamous scuffle is finally getting a clearer picture.
Fashion designer Oscar G. Lopez, who crafted Rachel Roy’s 2014 Met Gala gown, is offering his perspective on the night that turned a quiet hotel elevator into a global talking point.
According to Lopez, the incident had its roots in something seemingly innocuous, a compliment.
“I think that Jay-Z complimented [Roy] about the gown, and Beyoncé’s sister felt that it was not proper, so it was a kind of drama there,” he told the Daily Mail. Roy, 51, had arrived late to the gala, missing the red carpet entirely, so her black lace dress was not in the spotlight until the elevator fight made it headline news.
Page Six previously reported that Solange, reportedly intoxicated, had gotten into an argument with Roy upon arriving at the hotel, though the exact cause of their disagreement remains unknown. Lopez laughed recalling the media frenzy.
“The dress was all over the news. That was so funny. Any press is good press.” He also described Roy as a “sweetheart” and dismissed lingering rumors of an affair with Jay-Z as “silly,” emphasizing her longstanding professional connection to him.
For context, Roy had interned at Rocawear, the fashion label co-founded by Jay-Z and Damon Dash, eventually rising to become creative director for the women’s and children’s lines.
While music fans have speculated endlessly about Jay-Z’s past dalliances, Lopez stresses that Roy’s career and demeanor do not support these theories.
Of course, the affair rumors have never fully died down. Beyoncé famously referenced her husband’s infidelity in her 2016 hit Sorry, coining the unforgettable line “Becky with the good hair.”
Roy later posted a cheeky Instagram caption, “Good hair don’t care,” which she insisted was “misunderstood.” Jay-Z weighed in the following year with Family Feud, confirming he had cheated with “Becky” and asking her to “leave [him] alone.”
Meanwhile, Lopez recalls the fight itself. Surveillance footage shows Solange lunging at Jay-Z, swinging and kicking in the elevator after the Boom Boom Room afterparty.
