John Davidson, the 52-year-old face of the biographical film “I Swear,” is opening up about the high-profile racial slur incident that occurred during the February 22 BAFTA Awards.
While actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting on stage, Davidson’s Tourette’s syndrome resulted in him shouting the N-word that was heard by millions. After staying quiet for several days to let the public discourse simmer, Davidson turned to Facebook on March 1 to share his perspective.
“I’ve been waiting all week until the dust settles after the weekend at the BAFTAs in London,” he wrote. “I would like to thank each and every one of you who have shown love, support, and solidarity towards myself and the rest of the Tourette’s Community.”
The advocate’s presence at the London event was centered on his work raising awareness for those living with neurological conditions. In his post, he admitted that the backlash and the viral nature of the slip-up made for an incredibly taxing week.

“Your kind words and support have got me through a very difficult week,” Davidson continued. He made a clear distinction between his pride in his community and the unintended harm caused by the specific word used. “Whilst I will never apologize for having Tourette syndrome, I will apologize for any pain, upset, and misunderstanding that it may create.
Davidson used the moment to highlight how much education is still needed regarding coprolalia, the involuntary use of obscene or socially unacceptable language. He expressed that while the recent experience was “tough,” it only reinforced his drive to advocate for others.
“This past week has been tough, and it has reminded me that what I do raising awareness for such a misunderstood condition, there is still a long way to go and I will keep on keeping on until this is achieved,” he wrote, adding, “Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou I love you all.”
