Karen Huger is officially back, and she’s not letting anyone call her six-month jail stay a “vacation.” Appearing on the Sherri show on Thursday, the reality star shut down rumors that she was living in a cushy federal facility or getting plastic surgery while she was away.
Instead, she described a grueling reality that forced her to grow up fast. “I was not in federal. I was not, you know, and so I didn’t have the cushy white-collar situation. I had hardcore. I was on a metal bed facing a cold cement wall for six months,” Karen shared. She made it clear that while the public was talking, she was doing the work to save her own life after her March 2024 DUI. “No one should drink and drive,” she said. “I was wrong. Absolutely dead wrong. I’m so grateful no one was killed. No other person was hurt. I’m so grateful to be alive. I could have died.”
The conversation got even deeper when Sherri asked how Karen managed to keep her life together while filming The Real Housewives of Potomac. In a moment of pure transparency, Karen admitted she was a “functional addict” who knew exactly how to balance her substances to stay professional on set. “You could say I was a functional addict at that time,” she admitted. “I knew when to have the pills with the alcohol and my cocktail. It was never in front of the cameras. You’re not going to catch me melting down.” She explained that while she isn’t proud of that time, she’s done running from the reality of her choices. “I heard. I just didn’t listen,” she said about the warnings from her family. “And sometimes if you don’t take a break, somebody will take a break for you. That is what happened to me.”
For Karen, the real wake-up call wasn’t just being behind bars, it was seeing her children through a partition. She shared that seeing her “babies through a glass window” and the pain it caused them is what keeps her grounded today.
While locked up, she even turned her pain into a purpose by teaching Narcotics Anonymous classes to younger inmates. “Only a person who has experienced what I experienced can teach it,” she told Sherri, adding that her “degree” comes from her lived experience. As for the future and her messy castmates, Karen is unbothered by the shade. She knows her truth and is focused on her peace.
“Whether I return or not… that’s to be seen,” she noted, before reminding everyone that she’s still the same woman they know, just with a clearer head. “I really feel I’m the same Karen Huger. Just clean.”
