Kevin Durant Opens “Durant Center” For Underprivileged Kids To Prepare For College

KevinDurant opened the doors to “The Durant Center,” an after-school center to help teens better their future by offering assistance to students hoping to gain a college degree in his hometown.

Sports Illustrated’s Emily Caron stated that the NBA superstar has teamed up with the College Track organization to create the Durant Center. The center, which will be located in Durant’s hometown of Suitland in Prince George’s County, Maryland will carry on College Track’s leadership of supplying lower-income students with the help needed to start and finish their college career.

As reported by College Track’s website, their duty is to “empower students from underserved communities to graduate from college. By helping our students maximize the value of their college degree—minimize student loan debt, secure internships and limit the need to work while in college—we prepare today’s youth to succeed in the 21st-century economy.” This will be led by the Durant Center as it is stated KD will utilize his assets to form a 10-year plan that benefits students academically and financially.

Their partnership started in Feb. 2018 when Durant contributed $10 million to began construction on the building and the design is said to be KD’s personal venture to inspire his community.

“He was looking to really invest really deeply in his home community,” College Track chief executive Elissa Salas stated while Durant calls the center “the full-circle stuff that you dream about.”

The Durant Center will be available to all students in the Washington D.C. metropolitan and will be College Track’s first foundation on the East Coast.

The center’s grand opening took place on Wednesday, which was a day before Durant rejoined his hometown to play the Washington Wizards. The opening class was 69 local students.
