Kid Cudi is officially pushing back against Jim Jones after years of the Dipset rapper taking credit for his breakout success. The tension centers on Cudi’s 2008 hit Day n Nite and the long standing claim from Jones that his remix was the catalyst that propelled the song to the top of the charts and secured Cudi a major label deal.

In a series of videos shared to social media, Cudi addressed the situation head on, making it clear that while he has love for Jimmy, the math just does not add up.

Cudi started his response by acknowledging his respect for Jones before drawing a firm line. “Oh man, so starting my day and you know I see something online that have to address right? So Jim Jones first off we love Jim Jones. Right like i grew up on jimmy Like he’s the homie. I met him when I was coming up. He was cool right Jimmy I’m gonna address you directly my nigga You talking about how How you are responsible for my success is a lie You need to stop lying to people,” Cudi stated. He insisted that the momentum for the track was already undeniable long before any outside features were added.

According to Cudi, the organic growth of the original version on MySpace was what actually caught the attention of industry giants like Kanye West and Motown. “Day and night was already hit record Before you touched it my nigga I put it on my MySpace. It blew up Okay, i had an entire mixtape I was on my way Motown was courting me Kanye wanted to sign All because of day and night Because i’ll put it on my Myspace And it blew Up It blew Up,” he explained. Cudi also debunked the idea that executive Sylvia Rhone signed him because of the remix, saying, “I can promise you that Sylvia Rhone did not listen To your remix And say she Wanted To Sign Me That is Not why I have a record deal bro Nothing You’re talking about Is the truth How do You think i had a music video I Was shooting the Music Video I Was already on you saw A hit Record And jumped On it My nigga Like You didn’t Make me Man You Didn’t make Me.

The rapper expressed frustration that this narrative continues to resurface every few years. He noted that he has spent a long time staying silent while Jones claimed responsibility for his trajectory in various interviews. “This Jimmy Talking About How He’s Responsible For My Success This Comes Up Every Couple Years Hes Always Talkin about it An i’ve Been Ignoring It And Now Finally Imma Say Something you Know Cuz Not Bout Be Out Here Try Like Take Credit for Somethin That You Had Nothing Do With It,” Cudi added.

While Jones has maintained that his version helped the track gain heavy rotation on New York stations like Hot 97, the general consensus among fans has largely sided with Cudi. Many listeners pointed out that the original track and the subsequent Crookers remix were the versions that dominated the global club scene and radio.
