Killer Mike Launches New COVID-19 Campaign: “Stay Home, If You Can. Mask up, If You Can’t”

“Stay home, if you can. Mask up, if you can’t.” The phrase is part of a new ad campaign recently launched by Atlanta rapper, actor, and activist Michael Santiago Render, aka Killer Mike. The campaign, aimed at slowing the spread of the Coronavirus, will target young African Americans via radio, print, and billboard ads.

According to Atlanta’s WSB-TV2, Mike joined forces with DeKalb County CEO Michael L. Thurmond, after seeing viral videos of people gathering in large groups and ignoring social distancing rules.

“I just don’t want to see people who look like me die unnecessarily because of cabin fever,” Render told the station. “20, 30, 40-year-old adults, taking care of yourself is the highest priority. But not only just because of you, it’s because you’re going to expose yourself to people you love,” he explained.

The county says it plans to spend $200,000 on the ads, set to last until the end of the year. Last month, Mike also teamed up with T.I., to give back to the community. The two-handed out 500 hot meals, and reportedly gave several families $500 in cash and dropped off two weeks’ worth of food and hygiene products.

Killer Mike has continued to keep his string of Atlanta barbershops closed, despite Governor Brian Kemp reopening the state.
