Authorities say a man tied to the investigation into the shooting of New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd has turned himself in.
The 20-year-old, who is from the Bronx, walked into a Buffalo police facility on Monday and was taken into custody.
Detectives noted that no charges have been filed at this stage, even though his surrender occurred more than three weeks after Boyd was shot on November 16 in Manhattan.
The NYPD had previously shared a photograph of a man they hoped to question. Police have not confirmed whether the individual now in custody is the same person captured in that image. Officers did confirm that the man has a history with law enforcement that includes four earlier arrests, one of which involved a robbery while he was still a juvenile. There is also no current timetable for when he might be returned to New York City to face potential charges.
Investigators have been reviewing what led up to the shooting outside the Sei Less bar and restaurant.
According to police, a group of strangers approached Boyd and his friends around two in the morning. The interaction quickly became hostile after someone made a remark similar to, “You think you’re better than us?”
Boyd and his friends went inside the venue shortly after the comment, which police believe was an attempt to diffuse the situation. When they came back out roughly ten minutes later, the same group confronted them again.
Officers say the two sides began arguing, then shoving, before one person pulled out a gun and opened fire. Boyd was hit in the abdomen and collapsed as the shooter fled.
Surveillance footage played a significant role in helping detectives follow the suspect’s movements.
The video shows the gunman leaving the scene while talking on a phone, then heading toward a white BMW parked about two blocks away. Investigators are now using that footage along with witness accounts to determine what charges may come next.
