Las Vegas Man Indicted for Attempted Murder After Courthouse Attack on Judge

Deobra Redden

The Las Vegas felon, who was captured in a dramatic courtroom video attacking a judge by leaping over her bench, made another appearance before the same judge.

On Monday, Deobra Redden was brought into Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom with an extensive security presence. He was shackled, wearing orange mitts, and had a full-face spit hood in place. These heightened security measures evoked memories of a famous scene from the film “The Silence of the Lambs,” reminiscent of when the cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter, was transported while restrained to a dolly, dressed in a straitjacket and wearing a facemask.

Redden made his appearance a little past 9:30 a.m. to resume his sentencing hearing regarding a previous assault with a baseball bat. The initial hearing was abruptly interrupted last Wednesday when he vaulted over the judicial bench. Nevertheless, Holthus was able to proceed with sentencing Redden to a prison term of 19 to 48 months for his 2021 baseball bat assault. In the brief hearing, she stated that she was not altering or reconsidering the sentence in light of her recent attack.

Redden is scheduled to appear before a different judge on Tuesday to address the charges related to the attack on Holthus. His assault last week occurred during his plea to Holthus, begging her not to sentence him to prison for the baseball bat attack. He claimed to be “a person who never stops trying to do the right thing no matter how hard it is.”  At that moment, Redden was not restrained, but as he was about to be handcuffed, he erupted in a tirade of expletives. He then vaulted over a defense table, leaped over the judge’s bench, and landed on top of Holthus, causing her to be knocked off her chair.
