Not only has he been suspended for those games, he will also be fined an extra paycheck for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Though both players were arrested, Bell got a DUI which explains the harsher punishment. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that Bell will be appealing the suspension. It happened last August and he was already sentenced to a 15-month probation and lost his license for two months, but as always, further action from the NFL was expected. His lawyer had previously told reporters that he only faced a two-game suspension, however. I’d assume Bell is only fighting for, both, the additional paycheck and game but no details have been discussed as of now.
Bell was the NFL’s 2nd leading rusher last season with 1,361 yards and eight touchdowns. He was also the Steelers’ 2nd leading receiver after making 83 catches for 854 yards. If Bell’s absence is as detrimental as it seemed to be during Pittsburgh’s playoff game versus Baltimore (knee injury), those first few weeks may be a little rough on fans. The Steelers picked up former Carolina Panther, DeAngelo Williams, this offseason and will likely be leaning on him to make up for the vacancy, says Mike Chiari of BleacherReport.com.
