Authorities in Atlanta say a mass shooting at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was stopped just in time thanks to a quick-thinking family and fast police action. The suspect, 49-year-old Billy Joe Cagle, was arrested after his relatives alerted police that he was en route to the airport with plans to “shoot it up,” reportedly while livestreaming his intentions.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum confirmed that the Cartersville Police Department received the tip and quickly passed it on. Officers were able to locate Cagle inside the airport’s domestic terminal less than 15 minutes after the warning. His vehicle, parked outside, contained a loaded AR-15-style rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition. Cagle never made it back to the vehicle to retrieve the weapon, thanks to the rapid response of law enforcement.
Schierbaum credited the family’s actions, stating, “We’re here today briefing you on a success and not a tragedy because a family saw something and said something.” Mayor Andre Dickens echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that this was a clear example of “see something, say something” working exactly as intended.
Cagle, a convicted felon, now faces multiple charges, including terroristic threats, criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Officials said his motive remains under investigation.
The incident, which unfolded at one of the world’s busiest airports, serves as a chilling reminder of how close the city came to tragedy and how community awareness and swift law enforcement response can save lives. Thanks to one family’s bravery and officers’ quick action, Atlanta avoided what could have been a mass casualty event.
